Top Destinations in Tibet

Tibet is also known as the roof of the world, the land of snow or water tower of Asia, and so on. From the name itself, you can understand it is the world’s highest region with an average elevation of 4,300 m (29,500 ft). It has some of the world’s tallest mountains and longest mountain ranges. Tibet has been isolated from the rest of the world for so long due to its geographical terrain.

Geographical Highlights of Tibet

Traditionally there were three regions, U-Tsang, Kham, and Amdo regions.

U-Tsang Region is located along the arid Brahmaputra basin and extends to the Jangtang Plateau and the border of Nepal, Bhutan, and India.

Kham Region is the grasslands and gorges of the Salween, Mekong, Yangtze, and Yalong rivers and their highland watersheds.

Amdo Region is the fertile rolling grasslands around Lake Kokonor (Tso Ngonpo) and the Yellow River basin and, by extension, the richly forested Gyarong gorges to the south.

Modern Tibet regions are integrated into provinces of China, western and central Tibet as Tibet Autonomous Region, the eastern areas are mostly ethnic Autonomous Prefectures with Sichuan, Qinghai, Gansu, and Yunnan Provinces of the Peoples’ Republic of China.

Cultural Highlight

Buddhism is the dominant religion in Tibet, and the majority of Tibetans follow Tibetan Buddhism. There are few Muslim and Christian minorities in Tibet. Tibetan locals were mostly nomads and farmers. It has a unique culture in China. They are stout-hearted and independently minded, living in complete harmony with their environment.
