Tangkya Lhakhang

Tangkya Lhakhang

Located in the village of Tangkya on the north bank of the Kyi-chu, and accessible via a bridge a few kilometers north of Katsel, this geomantic temple was originally constructed in the 7th century by King Songsen Gampo, and later restored by Lu-me during the 12th century.

Further shrines were later added to the complex, including the 12th-century temple built to house the remains of the Nyingma lama Zhikpo Dudtsi (1149-99). Subsequently, the temple came under the influence of other traditions: the Taklung Kagyupa, the Jonangpa, and the Gelukpa, before being absorbed by the Namgyel Monastery of the Potala Palace. The present temple appears to contain three original clay images, extracted from one of the earlier (long destroyed) structures, and some bronze Kadam-style stupas.
