Tana Monastery

Chik Nyi Sep township is located 150km from Shomda town. It was once the remotest township under Nangchen county but nowadays, roads are great and easy to travel. The local inhabitants are largely engaged in nomadic life. It has some of the most famous monasteries and landscapes in Kham Nangchen.

Tana monastery is located 60km from Chik Nyi Sep township. It is situated at an altitude of 4400m. Tana monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in Kham Nangchen, it is also known as Jang Tana. The monastery is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and an alpine forest. Tana monastery is situated on a slope near the Tsichu river.

Tana monastery is Yelpa Kagyu monastery which was founded by Yelpa Yeshi Tsek. He was a major disciple of the Kagyu master Pakmodrupa in 1068 in Kham Nangchen. Traditionally, there was a Bon monastery and later converted to the Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism.

The most sacred murals mostly belong to the legend of King Gesar. These include two swords of Gesar and Yasi Karten of his brother Gyatsa. There are some hermitages on a rocky hill behind the monastery and from there you can see the whole valley.
