Potala Palace

Potala palace is the landmark of Lhasa City. It was first built in the 7th Century by the 33rd King of Tibet, Songsten Gampo. The present structure in the 17th Century by the 5th Dalai Lama. The building towers above the city of Lhasa rise from Mount Marpori. It is known locally as Tse Podrang Potala (summit palace).

The relics of Tibet’s past, present, and future national aspirations uniquely symbolize Tibet and the Tibetan people, like the Great Wall of China or the Vatican in Italy. The Potala Palace has two main sections; the outer section, the White palace, which was the traditional seat of the Tibet government, and the Dalai Lamas’s winter residence. The inner section known as Red Palace contains outstanding temples and the reliquary tombs of eight past Dalai Lamas.

This is the historical building listed as a World heritaHeritageby UNESCO. It was one of the world’s tallest buildings before the advent of the 20th-century skyscraper and undoubtedly the grandest building in Tibet. It has 13 floors and more than a thousand rooms.
