Gyama Town

Gyama Town

Gyama town is located 58km from Lhasa and 10km southwest of Meldro Gongkar in the village of Ngonda. Within the lower reaches of this valley is the reconstructed temple of Gyalpo Khangkar, containing images of Songtsen Gampo and his two foreign queens, which is said to be situated near the birthplace of the king himself.

Further up the valley, there is a succession of the former Kadampa monasteries of Dumburi, Gyamo Trikhang, and Rinchen Gang. Dumburi monastery was founded in the 12th century by Dumburipa Dawa Gyaltsen. Gyamo Trikhang was founded by Sangye Onton, the monastic preceptor of the neighboring Rinchen Gang. The monastery has renovated assembly hall and two chapels.

Rinchen Gang was founded in 1181 by Gyar Gomchenpa Shonu Drakpa and expanded by his nephew Sangye Onton. The monastery has renovated rooftops with new frescoes and relief images. The monastery has past connections with the Kashmiri Pandita Shakya Shiri and came under the influence of the Sakyapa tradition.
