Lhasa City

Lhasa City

Holy City
Potala Palace

Lhasa is the historic capital of Tibet, and Lhasa means “God’s Place,” considered the holiest city in Tibetan Region. It is situated on the north bank of the Kyi-Chu River. Mountains surround it; Mount Gephel Utse extends from the city’s north to Mount Dukri Tse and Mount Sera Utse to the east. To the city’s south is the Chakyak Karpo range, on the river’s far bank.

Within the Lhasa valley, there are three central hills. The most prominent is Marpori(Red Mountain), on which the Potala Palace is constructed. The Chapori is located on the right side of Marpori; there are some temples and a nunnery. It is pretty visible as dominated by a radio mast. Bonpori has a temple dedicated to Ling Gesar built by Manchu ambans, and the hill is located south of Mount Chapori.

Currently, Lhasa city is divided into two parts, the ancient city, and the modern Lhasa city. The ancient city consists of old Tibetan architectural landmark buildings of historical sites and old markets surrounded by local ancient buildings. The modern Lhasa city consists of high story-resident buildings, malls, world-class entertainment centers, and five-star hotels.
